SPACE's touch based application attracts attention at national disability seminar

SPACE presented three papers at the national seminar 'Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Disability Management', organised by Centre for Disability Studies from 3-4 December 2012 at Kanakakunnu, Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. Rijoy .V, Mr. Deepu Raj and Ms. Nila Ethel presented the topics 'Text to Speech Synthesis & its Applications for the Visually Challenged', 'Assistive Technologies for the Differently Abled', 'Early Intervention Measures for Prevention of Visual Impairment' respectively.

SPACE was also invited impromptu to demonstrate at the seminar, the application that it has developed using computer vision and 3D imaging technology which was a popular draw at the exhibition stall at the seminar. In this application developed by SPACE, the position of the hand is detected and mapped to the position of the mouse pointer, enabling multiple touch as the system identifies each hand as different points.

Researchers are of the view that colocation of users required in such applications can help improve the social communication of children. This technology can therefore be highly beneficial for autistic children.

Speakers at the seminar, Ms. Merry Barua, Director, National Centre for Autism, New Delhi, Ms. Farida Raj, Director, Centre of Special Education, Secunderabad, Dr. AnilKumar, Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry, Govt. Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram appreciated SPACE's initiative to explore new technologies for the benefit of special children.
