Workshop on FOSS in Science and Engineering

SPACE conducted a one day workshop on FOSS in Science and Engineering at SB College Chenganassery. Ganesh from SPACE briefed the students and teachers on the philosophy of free software. After that Mr Prajith, Research Fellow from SPACE presented his project, Molecular Workbench, a free and open source software for Physics.

He showed how Molecular Workbench can be used to provide visual, interactive experiments for teaching science. He explained its capabilities to explore physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, and nanotechnology with interactive simulations.

During the afternoon session, Ganesh introduced different FOSS tools for science and engineering such as Sage, Scilab, LaTeX, Ardrino etc. He also gave an introduction to Open Educational Resources and different online courses and study materials. More than 50 students and teachers participated in the workshop. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof Prabha, Head, Department of Physics. Dr. Jacob Mathew, Professor, Dept. of Physics also gave a talk on free software and its use in science and education.
