SPACE will join hands with Beginow and Free Software Users Group-Trivandrum to organise Hardware Freedom Day celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram. A series of programmes will be held at the Bandstand , Napier Museum from 3 p.m to 7 p.m on 20 April 2013. During the event, various open hardware projects will be demonstrated. These include international initiatives like Arduino for robotics, Raspberry Pi for low cost computing, RepRap 3D printing technology and the Indian project expEYES for scientific experimentation, initiated by the Malayalee scientist Dr Ajith Kumar.

Hardware Freedom Day is a yearly celebration of Open Hardware. Since 2004, people the world over have been celebrating Software Freedom Day, often showcasing Open Hardware in the process. The campaign aims at educating the public about the benefits of using and promoting Open Hardware. It also provides an international day to serve as a platform to draw attention to current projects and communities around the world as well as encourage participation in local Open Hardware initiatives.

Kerala has set a model for India by going for free software in a significant way. It has now extended this spirit of freedom into other key areas of computing by assuming leadership in open hardware initiatives. Thiruvananthapuram is among the four places where Hardware Freedom Day is being celebrated in India.
