Promote women in Floss

SPACE in coordination with Mozilla Kerala organized a one day event for women on February 8, 2014 at Central Polytechnic College, Vattiyoorkavu, Thiruvananthapuram. The aim of the program is to promote and involve more women in the FLOSS world and to increase the awareness of web issues facing by women, especially, regarding the privacy of women using the Internet.

The event was handled by SPACE and 2 volunteers from Mozilla Kerala. Event started off with the introduction to Free Software and then a discussion about Web Privacy, precautions to be taken to secure online profiles and how to browse the internet safely. The participants actively participated in this discussion and we had cleared many queries.

In the afternoon session we had planned a small Webmaker workshop for the participants and gave a brief introduction to remixing websites using X-Ray Goggles, a Mozilla tool which provides a simple easy way for anyone to inspect Web pages and learn about how they are put together. Then the partcipants had the Webmaking session and soon remixed different websites.

About 40 participants attended the event and they had entirely a new experience. Mr. Mohan, Head of the Department of Computer Science of the college thanked us for bringing the event to their college and was delighted to host future events.
