Alakal FM - runs on Free Software

Radio Alakal, the first exclusive fisheries community in India is expected to start a daily 3 hour broadcast from May 1 2006. Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment (SPACE) is providing the technical support for the project, and the content is made exclusively using Free Software. Alakal, the FM radio for fishing communities is currently structured in collaboration with Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation (KSMTF), South Indian Federation of Fishermen Societies (SIFFS), Indiadisasters.org and Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment (SPACE). Alakal broadcast is now limited to Thiruvanvthapuram, but similar initiatives are being planned in Nagercoil and Kollam as well.
