Bringing the Magic out of children: A summer camp with a difference

The joy with which children anticipate the two month long break from school in summer is often spoiled by the lack of choices that confronts them once it finally gets underway. The urban solution for this problem-the summer camp, a sometimes pricey but welcome day time getaway for children, is what working parents count on for the safe upkeep of their children. For the children it means much more: making new friends, learning an art/craft or two and exploring subjects that never make it to their curriculum at school.

MAGIC Summer, a camp organised by Insight, stands out among the crowd this summer for the basket of choices it has given to special children. Insight's centre at Murinjapalam, Trivandrum is a beehive of activity as resource persons and trainers take the children through various exercises and fun activities. The day starts with yoga session to help the children relax followed by more vigorous activities that includes group games, gardening, painting etc. Learning is embedded in all the activities in such a way that children pick up vocabulary, develop good eating habits, exercise their imagination without spoiling the fun element in them. 17 special children have enrolled for this camp.

Insight's centre at Vellayambalam meanwhile is open for visually challenged children who are guided by the trainers to explore various ICT tools in its computer lab. Currently there are 28 students attending the classes.

The camps are organised free of cost for school going children by Insight which is a joint initiative of SPACE and Kerala State IT Mission.
