Donald Knuth developed the typesetting program TeX in the eighties to beautifully typeset technical documents, especially documents containing lot of mathematics. Soon after, Leslie Lamport developed a more user-friendly version of TeX called LaTeX By now (La)TeX has become the standard in scientific publishing. The fact that TeX is in the public domain has contributed enormously to its growing popularity and development. Originally conceived as a tool for producing beautifully printed documents, TeX also adapts itself to the current age in which The Web is the medium.
