Advanced modeling using free software tools and libraries

The advantages of free and open source software as opposed to closed source applications in an academic research environment will be shown. Cross disciplinary tools for advanced modeling within a multi-scale modeling frame- work will be introduced. The need for supercomputers (read linux clusters) for certain problems will be shown with a couple of examples. Open-source tools and libraries to perform parallel programming using a networked linux cluster will be introduced.
