Workshop on GNU/Linux from scratch

A workshop on GNU/Linux from scratch was conducted on 10th and 11th of October 2015 in SPACE. About 13 students from College of Engineering Trivandrum  participated in this event. On the first day they built tools for compilation by using host system and on the second day they built and installed various packages. During these two days of workshop they attempted to build an entire GNU/Linux system from its source code.

Workshop in LaTeX

Workshops in LaTeX, a document preparation system, is being planned in the coming weeks. Those who are interested may please register here.  You can choose your convenient timing at the time of registration from between two options: weekend course (Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 4) and week-day course (Monday to Friday 6 pm to 7 pm). In either case  a fee of Rs.1000/- is to be paid half in advance and half at the end. You can pay either by draft/cash(directly or by post).

1st HackerSPACE training program

1st HackerSPACE training program was successfully completed this month. The two-month long Python training program started in Dec 2014. 8 girls successfully completed the training program. ZestyBeanz Technologies provided financial support for the training program. Training was led by Dr Lalitha Prasad, former Head of Corporate Learning Centre, Tata Consultancy Services, Trivandrum. Experts from ZestyBeanz and SPACE also gave lectures to the participants.

IGNITE International Girls Hackathon event held at SPACE FEB 13-16, 2015

SPACE-KERALA, in partnership with Global Fund for Women, led the IGNITE International Girls Hackathon event, organized by Global Fund for Women, in India - one of the hackathon event locations, at SPACE, Kerala on February 13-16, 2015. Four different teams of girl coders joined their hands to contribute their talent, ideas, and creativity to build real world solutions to a critical challenge facing women and girls: access to safe spaces.They came up with a prototype of a website and an application that addresses the challenge of giving girls more and better access to safe spaces.

Inauguration of Accessible Computing Facility for Visually Challenged Students at Thiruvananthapuram

On January 14th, 2015, an Orca-enabled GNU/Linux lab for visually challenged students was inaugurated by Kerala’s Minister for Social Welfare Dr.M.K.Muneer at GCTE, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram. Lab was setup with the technical support from SPACE. During the function visually challenged Orca trainer C.N.Sukumaran demonstrated how the screen reader is being used.

Audacity for Childrens Community Radio

A workshop on audio editing software Audacity was conducted on December 21st 2014 at Wayanad in association with MSSRF CAbC Wayanad and their project ECAS (Every Child A Scientist) community radio. ECAS Radio is a children’s initiative – a community radio run by twelve children, who were the participants of this workshop.

Swathanthra 2014 at Thiruvananthapuram

Swathanthra 2014, the 5th International Free Software Conference, partnered by SPACE, took place from December 18th to 20th at Thiruvananthapuram with the theme ‘Free Software for a Free World’. The penultimate day of the conference featured a session called Freedom on the Cloud, with discussions on issues related to cloud computing, surveillance and privacy, chaired by SPACE Executive Director Arun.
